Manchester 13s drop one
to Maine

Westbrook, Maine, moved one step closer to making
its second straight World Series appearance as the defending
Little League regional champs rallied to defeat the Manchester
Ray Lebel 13-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars, 8-6, in the New
England Regional winners’ bracket final.
Westbrook, which went to Williamsport last summer,
will wait for the winner of today’s 4:30 p.m. Burlington,
Mass.-Manchester winner. The first championship game will
be played tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. Westbrook will need to be
beaten twice.
With Manchester leading, 5-4, in the fifth inning,
Westbrook pushed four runs across the plate on five hits as
Scott Heath, Zack Collett, Nick Finocchiaro and Sean Murphy
all singled while Jake Gardner doubled in the rally.
“It was a tough loss,” said Manchester
manager Tony Doucet. “Our kids battled hard. Lots of
credit goes to the Westbrook team. They hit the ball real
hard today after their bats came alive.”
Westbrook had taken a 4-0 lead with two outs
in the third. Heath, who had three hits, and winning pitcher
Zack Gardner both singled in the frame while Murphy delivered
two runs with a double.
Manchester answered with four runs of its own
in the bottom of the third with Joe Stisser’s single
and a two run double by Seth Stone. Manchester went on top,
5-4, in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single down the
left field line by Travis Sylvia.
Stisser and Stone sparked Manchester with two
hits apiece.

Westbrook rolls past Augusta 12-1 to
open Babe Ruth regional

AUGUSTA — The pomp and circumstance that goes with playing
in high-profile baseball tournaments is nothing new to the
Westbrook Babe Ruth players who took the field in the 13-year-old
New England Regional championships Saturday afternoon. The
parade of players, ceremonial first pitches and special renditions
of the national anthem, these kids have seen it all.
Augusta's 13-year-old all-stars have not.
Last summer, 10 of the players on Westbrook's Babe Ruth all-star
team reached the Little League World Series. Those players
showed poise Saturday, cruising to a 12-1 win over a jittery
Augusta team at Morton Field in a game shortened to five innings
by the mercy rule.
"I think it was the intimidation factor again,"
Augusta Manager Gary Lapierre said. Augusta lost to Westbrook
10-5 in the opening game of the state championship tournament
last weekend. "I think the kids are intimidated."
Westbrook moves into the winners' bracket and will play Waterford,
Conn., at 2 p.m. today at McGuire Field. Augusta, the tournament
host, falls into the losers' bracket and will play Essex,
Vt., at McGuire at 10 a.m.
Westbrook entered the tournament as the favorite and with
a target on its back. One game into the tournament, it's proven
it can handle the pressure.
"People say stuff about us, but we try to ignore it,"
said Westbrook starting pitcher Joe Royer, who threw five
innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits. "This
is a totally different game, on a bigger field. What we did
last year doesn't matter."
Westbrook has taken to the bigger Babe Ruth field just fine,
thanks in large part to a strong lineup. Westbrook pounded
out 13 hits Saturday and took advantage of two walks and four
Augusta errors.
After a scoreless first, Westbrook scored once in the second
and lost a run when it was ruled that Mike Mowatt missed third
base. It came back with two in the third on an RBI single
by Sean Murphy and an RBI double by Nick Finnochiara. Three
more runs in the third and six in the fifth put the game away.
