14 Year Old All-Star Game Summaries

7/29/06
The 14 year old Westbrook All Stars got eliminated on Saturday, while bringing closure, in a hard-fought tourney . Westbrook lost to the eventual state champs 8 -2, behind a very strong pitching performance from Travis Jordan. Although giving up 8 runs, only 1 goes in the books as earned. Westbrook's defense was clearly affected from the heat and couldn't put it together. After giving up 4 runs, but only 1 earned in the first inning, Westbrook held Augusta at bay over the next 2 innings, before rain suspended play. Upon return, Westbrook quickly got back into the game with 2 runs, but it didn't stay that way long. 4 more unearned runs put the game away and AUgusta cruised to the 8 - 2 win. Westbrook came back later against Mid Coast East. Still showing affects of heat fatigue, Westbrook quickly fell behind 12 - 1 after 2 innings. This Westbrook group was not about to pack it in. After regrouping in the dugout,Craig Champagne came in to pitch, in relieve, with Westbrook down 12 - 1 and shut out the Mid Coast team in the 3rd. Westbrook came back out swinging, grabbing a quick 4 runs, to bring the score to 12 - 5. Craig continued to pitch to perfection and Westbrook slowly chipped away at the lead. With Craig Champagne holding this Mid Coast team at bay, the confidence was building up and down the line up. Westbrook hitters showed determination, after Kevin Moody led off the 5th with a single, Eben Wintle quickly deposited a sharp single of his own and the Westbrook kids were off! Dane Tupper stepped up, with 2 on, and Westbrook losing 12 - 5, but feeling some momentum. After quickly falling behind 0 - 2, Dane fought off numerous pitches, getting the count back to 3 - 2. Again working hard in the box, Dane demonstrated what good hitters do and eventually gained the walk, after making the pitcher work excessively and now the bases were loaded. Andrew Beckwith came on to rip a single, driving in a pair. Dan Roukey delivered a sharp single, driving in 2, and this was now a game! Craig Champagne closed out the scoring, with a run scoring single and it was now 12 - 10. Westbrook threatened again in the 6th, with bases full and 1 out, but could only muster up 1 run. In the 7th, Westbrook led off with a sharp, well-placed double from Chad Egeland, but couldn't push any more runs home. This game got as exciting as it could and Westbrook showed why they were in the states and finished 3rd in the tourney. The fans were on their feet, with everyone feeling "it" but it wasn't meant to be. Westbrook 14 year olds have alot to look forward to next year. They showed plenty of depth in pitching, timely hitting, a great attitude, and comraderie amongst the team.

Westbrook 14s drop district, but ready to host states

REGIONAL (July 27, 2006): Westbrook’s pitching struggled early Tuesday, much as it had struggled late the day before, allowing their opponents to sweep a pair of games in the 14-year-old Babe Ruth District 4 tournament at Windham.

South Portland – at least that’s who the uniforms said they were; players from Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough and Falmouth were also on the team – took an early lead and held on for the 6-4 win and district title.

Westbrook, however, is still in the mix at the state tournament, which was scheduled to start Wednesday.

“We played this a little different based on the fact that we’re in the states anyway because we’re hosting,” said coach Steve Marchant. “We feel pretty confident that we’re ready to go.”

Marchant brought in Tom Pratt to pitch midway through Tuesday’s game and the righthander shut down his opponents, but South Portland had scored six runs already and that would prove to be enough.

“They battled back,” said South Portland coach Andrew Dickey. “Luckily we got enough of a lead to hold on, because we didn’t do anything the last three innings.”

Six singles and eight walks in the first three innings catapulted Dickey’s crew. They had come back with four runs on six walks and one hit in the last inning Monday for a 4-1 victory to set up the final in the double-elimination tournament.

Down by six going into the fourth, Kevin Moody led off with a single to left field and the Pratt was hit by a pitch. Travis Jordan’s grounder went under the first baseman’s glove, bringing home Moody.

When Andrew Beckwith walked, the bases were loaded, and Pratt came home on a wild pitch.

In the fifth, Lance Ludka reached on an infield hit and eventually scored on Jordan’s infield hit. Then, when Jordan drew a throw as he stole second, Moody, who was on third after reaching on a fielder’s choice, bolted home.

Despite loading the bases in the sixth, Westbrook couldn’t add any more runs.

“We struggled with pitching a little early,” Marchant said. “Once we found the right mix, we came back and fought hard.”

The coach added that the luxury of having an automatic berth at the states allowed him to try some different pitchers, which will help the team in the next round. He dismissed any worries about losing momentum going into states.

“I think their confidence level is where it needs to be.”

The Westbrook 14 Year Old All Stars sucumb to Scarborough in the 7th inning in the first game of the district championship by the score of 4 -1. Westbrook's duo of relief pitchers couldn't find the strike zone in the 7th inning, after surrendering several walks, sandwiched around 1 hit, while allowing 4 runs. This game was highlighed by pitching and defense, with Keegan Goan holding Scarboro at bay, with his complete command on all his pitches, while mixing it up masterfully. A couple of stellar defensive plays from the Westbrook defense kept Scarborough off the board, second baseman Nick Levesque ranged into the outfield, to make a highlight reel catch, with backstop Tom Pratt making a similar big time catch, near the dugout as he went to the ground but held on. Scarborough pitching held Westbrook at bay, with the exception of an infield single by Dane Tupper, resulting in the lone Westbrook run.
